Nettie Elizabeth Stickney was born 24 March 1872, at Brownville, Maine, the daughter of Enos Wilder Stickney and his wife Elizabeth Rachel Searles. Her paternal grandparents were Simeon Atwood Stickney and wife Sarah W. Gilman. Her maternal grandparents were James Madison Searles and wife Almeda Rich.

Nettie Elizabeth Stickney married Horace Layton Johnson in 1898. Horace was born 21 December 1872 at Grand Lake, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of Reverend Robert O'Brien Johnson and first wife Martha Ann "Annie" (Harrison) Johnson. See his page for more information.
