Researching Downeast Maine and Maritime Canada Families Together
Photograph of Nellie Mae Balano at age 11 and her family tree.
Nellie Mae Balano was born in July of 1884, the daughter of Isaiah H. Balano and his wife Margaret Ann (Wall) Balano. Her paternal grandparents were John Balano, born about 1910 in Smyrna, Greece, and Sarah (possibly Wall) Balano. Her maternal grandparents were Ezekiel and Diana (Hart) Wall.
In 1909, Nellie married Hugh Augustus Merrill, who was born 10 March 1876 at Yarmouth, Maine, the son of Joseph Green Merrill and his wife Martha M. (Stiles) Merrill. His paternal grandparents were Silas and Sarah (Green, possibly) Merrill. His maternal grandparents were Jonathan and Sally S. (Noble) Stiles. See his family tree, below Nellie's.
I found Nellie and Hugh in the 1910 Census in Augusta; the 1920 Census in Rockland and in the 1930 Census in Portland.
Interestingly, I found a book edited by James W. Balano entitled The Log of the Skipper's Wife, recounting the diary Dorothea Balano kept of her adventures while aboard a commercial schooner that sailed between Maine and Puerto Rico in the early 1900s.
