James Moore, b. 1837, likely Ellsworth Maine; m. Laura Ann Garland, b. 1838, Ellsworth, Maine
James Moore was born 30 May 1837, probably at Ellsworth, Maine, the son of Gary Townsend Moore and wife Mariam (Garland) Moore.

His paternal grandparents were John and Polly (Townsend) Moore. His maternal grandparents were Josiah and Sarah "Sally" (Swett) Garland.
On 21 August 1858, James married cousin Laura Ann Garland. She was born 5 February 1838 at Ellsworth, Maine, the daughter of Leonard Jarvis Garland and wife Azuba A. (Moore) Garland.
Her paternal grandparents were Josiah and Sarah "Sally" (Swett) Garland. Her maternal grandparents were Edward and Elizabeth B. (Maddocks) Moore.
The couple had, from what I could find online, four children, two sons and two daughters:
- John Roland Moore, born 29 May 1859; married Lois Anna Boynton
- Winfield Scott Moore, born 12 May 1862; married Vesta Estella Garland
- Ellen Elvira Moore, born 11 March 1866; married Francis J. Boynton
- Lorinda Ann Moore, born 23 September 1872; married George Whitmore "Whit" Garland
James Moore kept a sporadic diary. He had an entry in 1868, another in 1869, another in 1892 and then more or less consistently until his death in 1903. After that his daughter in law Vesta Estella (Garland) Moore, wife of James' son Winfield Scott Moore, took over the diary and kept it going for a while.

I'm particularly looking for the parents of Sarah "Sally" Swett. Many sources list them as Joseph and Jemima (Wormwood) Swett, but there are differing dates, making me wonder if some sources have confused people with the same name. These people also occur in the family of Laura Ann (Garland) Moore.

That's very interesting! Will have to see if Ancestry.com or Family Search have any new information. And I'll be on the lookout for that book for sure! I haven't finished transcribing the diaries. Am posting monthly updates and will continue transcribing when I come to the end of what I've done already. James' daughter in law picked up on the diaries some years later. I didn't find any new records but I noticed some online family trees that had Jerusha Wormwood as Sarah Sally Swett's mother, so there is a strong likelihood. Thanks for adding this info.

I found a reference where my 4th GGrandmother Sarah Swett's parents were Joseph Swett and Jerusha Wormwood. Unfortunately there was no further information that I could find at the Maine State Library. The source was:

Hanscom, c1987 (Waltham, Mass. : Minuteman Press) It is interesting that Josiah Garland Sr. and Miriam Moore had two children who married Wormwoods;
Thomas married Nelly Wormwood of Ellsworth
John married Sally Wormwood of Ellsworth.
All of these Wormwoods from the same local area are undoubtedly connected, now if I can just find out how.
If you have any further information on Sarah {Sally} Swett's ancestors I would appreciate an update.
