Haven Appleton Butler was born 28 October 1820 at Berwick, Maine, the son of Oliver and Abby Vickery (Odiorne) Butler.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel and Nancy Anna (Shorey) Butler.  His maternal grandparents were William and Lucy Texia Tufton (Moffat) Odiorne.

On 23 May 1841 at North Berwick, Maine, he married Lucy Perkins Ricker, who was born about 1820 at North Berwick, Maine, the daughter of Robert and Lucy (Perkins) Ricker.  Her paternal grandparents were Reuben and Hannah (Gould) Ricker.  Her maternal grandparents were William and Lucy (Littlefield) Perkins.

Lucy and Haven raised a family of at least six children.
