 Harriet Annie Barnes was born 9 June 1862 at St. George, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of Charles and Lavinia (Scott) Barnes.  Her paternal grandparents were Peter and Ann Barnes.  Her maternal grandparents were Charles and Jane B. (Grierson) Scott.

In 1883, she married John Alexander Howard, who was born 29 September 1853 in Canada, the son of Donald Ross Howard and his wife Sarah Ann (Graham) Howard.  I believe the couple had three children: Fred G. Howard; Edith M. Howard; Gladys A. Howard.
